Utah Set To Make History

Utah is set to make Rugby League history by hosting its first ever game of League as 2012 continues to shape up as a breakout year for the sport across America.

American National Rugby League expansion team Utah Avalanche is scheduled to play its first exhibition game on Saturday, April 21.

The Salt Lake City-based Avalanche will travel north to Logan to take on local rugby club the Titans.

The Logan Titans compete in Utah’s 10-team Polynesian League, which features an annual tournament every summer.

“We decided to play a scrimmage game because we want to let everyone here see how easy it is to learn and play rugby league,” Avalanche CEO George Tupou told WeAreRugby.

“They (Logan Titans) have a lot of ex-football players and they find the rules easier to follow and similar to football. The game has been in the making for the last 10 weeks before we confirmed it.

“The game will be played in Logan, northern Utah, and we’re hoping to have a return game in Salt Lake City a couple weeks after that. Our goals here have always and will be to start a four or five team competition.”

The Utah Avalanche is one of three newly established teams that are slated to form the basis of a new AMNRL Western Conference. The Blizzards, out of Denver, and Las Vegas Warriors are also in line to play exhibition games this year.
