National Semifinalists Set
The domestic rugby league competition in Jamaica has reached the business end of proceedings with the national semifinalists all set.
Duhaney Park Red Sharks won the Jamaica Rugby League Association League Leaders Trophy with a 36-28 result over a fighting Jamaica Defense Force team in the final round of the regular season.
The soldiers held a 20-6 halftime lead, but failed to hold on as a furious second half rally saw the Reds rush to an exciting eight-point win. After completing their seven regular season games, the Reds are on 19 points, three ahead of second place Vauxhall Rugby Club.
GC Foster secured a third place finish on 15 points in the League with a 38-12 victory over Spanish Town Vikings. Antonio Baker (2), Adrian Myers (2), Ryan Spence and Steven Wynter all scored tries for the victors and Grant kicked seven conversions. For Spanish Town, Kevon Vassell and Lemar Ellis each scored a try with Ellis kicking the conversions. The result left the JDF Warriors and Maxfield Rookies Star Steppers tied on 12 points each; however, Maxfield goes into the playoffs in fourth position as they beat the Army men in their regular season encounter, thus topping the tie-breaker.
New team St Andrew Renegades celebrated their first win by outpointing Portmore Sons 42-14. The new club has shown much promise with good displays despite being inexperienced and undermanned, they handed Portmore the wooden spoon with a clinical display. Both teams have completed their regular season campaign and will now look to next year. Renegades end on 3 points and Portmore never got off the mark losing all seven games.
The semifinals will be played on Saturday, September 1 when Vauxhall face GC Foster Lions and Duhaney Park Red Sharks take on the speedy Maxfield Rookies Star Steppers.
