Cross Code Game In Utah
Rugby League history will continue to be made in Utah this weekend as AMNRL expansion team Utah Avalanche gets set to tackle local rugby union club the Provo Steelers.
The Steelers are one of the longest surviving rugby clubs in Utah and they are also one of the most dominating clubs in the state.
The Steelers are coming off a tournament victory, hosted by ex-NFL player Fahu Tahi, last weekend and are fit and ready to go.
The Avalanche reached out to Timote Halasima, who is in charge of the Provo side, in an attempt to play two games so that Avalanche players can gain some experience and some match fitness before their planned trip north of the border to British Columbia.
The Utah league team is scheduled to face off against the BC Bulldogs in the Western Challenge Cup on August 18.
“Timote Halasima understood the Avalanche’s situation and he was happy to assist and play a game or two,” said Avalanche president George Tupou.
“The Steelers are an all-Islander team and they play hard and fast. It will be a good test for the Avalanche boys. The Avalanche welcomes the game and look forward to a good hit out against the Provo Steelers.”
The Avalanche hopes that playing the Steelers will help raise awareness of rugby league in Utah and encourage people to learn and play the game in Utah.
